Obscure Glass for Windows & Doors — professional installation by Eden Glass in Essex

Obscure Glass for Windows & Doors

Privacy without losing the light. Choose from 15+ textured glass designs with a wide range of obscurity levels.

    What is obscure glass?

Obscure glass is any glazing that softens or blocks the view through the pane while still letting natural daylight flood into the room. Sometimes called privacy, frosted, patterned or textured glass, it is created by rolling, etching or sandblasting one face of the pane during manufacture so the surface scatters light and breaks up shapes behind it.

It is the standard choice for bathrooms, en-suites, WCs, front-door side panels and any window overlooked by neighbours or the street — anywhere you want the brightness of glass without the fishbowl. Eden Glass installs every obscure glass style as part of our PVC, Aluminium and composite door installations across Essex and Suffolk.

Where can obscure glass be used?

Anywhere you want full daylight and full privacy. These are the rooms and openings we fit it into most often.

    Bathrooms, en-suites & WCs

    Bathrooms, en-suites & WCs

The most popular use by far. A textured pane blocks any view from neighbours or the street while keeping the room bright enough to feel airy, even on north-facing elevations. We fit Satin or Cotswold for a soft modern feel, or Taffeta where maximum privacy is needed.

Front doors & hallway side panels

Front doors & hallway side panels

Composite doors with obscured side lights and fanlights stop passers-by seeing straight into your hallway, but still flood it with daylight. A neat solution for terraced and semi-detached homes where the door opens directly onto the pavement.

    Overlooked side & ground-floor windows

    Overlooked side & ground-floor windows

Any window facing a neighbouring property, a side passage or a public footpath benefits from an obscured pane. On extensions and loft conversions it is commonly required by a planning condition — often to a specified obscurity level, and non-opening below 1.7m. We specify the right level for you.

    Obscure glass textures

Every Pilkington Texture Glass style we fit. Hover any tile to see how strongly it obscures (level 1 = barely there, level 5 = full privacy).

Is obscure glass right for you?

Where it is used, and when standard glass is the better call.

Obscured glass could well be the right choice if…

    • Your bathroom, en-suite or WC is overlooked by neighbours, the street or a public footpath
    • You want a brighter alternative to blinds, frosted film or permanently drawn nets
    • You need a decorative front-door side panel that still lets light into the hallway
    • Building Control or planning requires obscured glazing on a side-facing window

Obscured glass might not be for you if…

    • The window is your main view of the garden. Clear glass keeps the outlook
    • You only need privacy at night. In this case blinds or shutters may be cheaper
    • The room is already dark. A less heavily textured option (level 1–2) will help
    • You want a one-way mirror effect. That needs reflective film or smart glass, not obscure glass

    Pair with the right frame

Obscure glass is supplied as part of a sealed unit. Choose the frame system you want it fitted into — every Pilkington texture is available across our full range.

Obscure glass patterns from Eden Glass are available across most of our frame systems. You can even mix and match clear and obscured panes within the same unit if you prefer.
